In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia launched its third substantial missile strike on Ukraine within four days, targeting Kyiv for the second time. Poland’s military reported a brief breach of its airspace by a missile aimed at western Ukraine. According to Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, Russia utilized cruise missiles launched from Tu-95MS strategic bombers.
Kyiv was placed on high alert for over two hours as clusters of rockets approached from the north. Popko disclosed that the attacks originated from the Engels district in Russia’s Saratov region. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or damages in Kyiv.
Poland, a NATO member, confirmed a breach of its airspace at 4:23 a.m. by a Russian cruise missile targeting towns in western Ukraine. The missile intruded near the Polish town of Oserdów, remaining in Polish airspace for 39 seconds before exiting. Polish military radar systems meticulously tracked the missile, with all necessary safety protocols promptly enforced to safeguard airspace.
Poland announced its intention to demand an explanation from Moscow. Pawel Wronski, the foreign ministry spokesman, emphasized the cessation of terrorist airstrikes against Ukraine and the necessity for Russia to focus on its internal issues. He stressed that the missile would have been intercepted if it posed a threat to Polish territory.
The missile, traveling at approximately 800 kilometers per hour (500 mph) and flying at an altitude of around 400 meters (1,300 feet) above the ground, crossed about two kilometers into Polish territory before exiting.
